Questions and Answers About Greyhounds

Do greyhounds require a lot of exercise?
No, they enjoy walks but are generally mellow and calm. Many are couch potatoes. They are generally happy to lounge around and tend to sleep around 18 hours a day, but do need exercise. Greyhounds are actually calm dogs, hence their "45 mph couch potato" nickname. Greyhounds can be good apartment dogs, as long as their owner is absolutely committed to a regular exercise regime for the dog.

Are greyhounds housebroken?
Housebreaking is relatively easy because greyhounds are trained to keep their kennels clean. Greyhounds are very routine oriented, so frequent scheduled walks or "potty" breaks reinforce that outside is the place to go when nature calls!

Are greyhounds good with kids?
Greyhounds are very social but have limited exposure to children. They are gentle and affectionate and are generally tolerant of well-behaved children.

Must greyhounds be kept on a leash?
Yes, except when in a fenced-in area or indoors. They must NEVER be tied out or restrained with an electrical / invisible fence. They are just WAY too quick for an invisible fence.

Are greyhounds good with cats and other small animals?
Most greyhounds can live peacefully with small animals, such as cats or small dogs. Our organization tests all our greyhounds for compatibility with small animals. However, caution and common sense should always be exercised when first introducing a greyhound to any other animal. We want it to be a good match for both hound and new owner!
