A: Greyhounds are very social but have limited exposure to children. They are gentle and affectionate by nature and generally very tolerant of children. Children must always be taught to respect animals.

Q: Must Greyhounds be kept on a leash?

A: YES, except when in a fenced yard or indoors. They CANNOT be tied outside or restrained with an electrical fence. Greyhounds are sight hounds and can see can up to a half-mile away…they can see what we can’t see, and will run to get it. Your greyhound is leash trained and most walk very well on a leash.

Q: Are Greyhounds good with cats?

A: We cat test our Greyhounds before placement. Most live in harmony with cats and small dogs. Greyhounds are docile and non-confrontational by nature.

Q: Do greyhounds like the car?

Q: Do Greyhounds like the hot or cold weather?

A: During hot temperatures, you greyhound is susceptible to heat stroke, just as you are. It is wise during hot weather to exercise early and easier. Make sure your dog is completely cooled down before eating.

In cold weather, a fleece coat is an excellent idea for walking in the winter, as they are used to the warm climate and don’t have the body fat or heavy coat like most dogs. Check your dog’s feet for snow packing which can split the webs or pads of their feet. Cleaning your dog’s feet in warm water after a walk to rinse off any salt or other ice melters is a good idea.

Your greyhound is an inside pet and should not be kept out for long periods of time.

Q: Do Greyhounds play with toys?

A: Your greyhound may not know how to play because no one has ever taught him or showed him how. He was bred as a business, not as a pet, so it’s your job to teach him to play. And it’s the funniest job you’ll ever have. Lots of plush toys, ropes or balls are recommended, as they will pick and choose what they like when their in the mood. You may not get to see the silly side of you greyhound for the first month or so until he feels quite secure. When you see the classic bottom up, front end down pose bouncing in front of you, you’ll know it’s time to play…and is quite amusing.

Q: Can Greyhounds swim?

A: No, greyhounds have a very small percentage of body fat, so they will sink. Be very careful with your greyhound around pools and ponds. They have never seen one and won’t understand that the blue stuff is water.
